Food packaging splits into two large families. Vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) machines pull film off a roll, form it into a tube on a forming collar, dose the product from above, and seal — ideal for granulars, snacks, powders, frozen pieces. Horizontal flow-pack machines run the film and product side by side and wrap each piece individually — ideal for bars, biscuits, single chocolates, narrow rigid items. Choosing the wrong family is the most expensive packaging mistake.

The variables you actually order against are bag width range, film width and thickness, maximum output (bags/min), seal type (cold seal, jaws, rotating wheels), and gas flush option. The trap: the stated bags/min is achieved on water-like granulate. Real product, with its fines, bridge formation, and irregular shape, often runs 30–50% slower until the feeder is sized correctly. So the upstream feeder — auger, multihead weigher, conveyor — is part of the packaging spec, not an accessory.

Two common buyer mistakes: ordering on bags/min without specifying the SKU mix the machine has to switch between (a 20 g spice pack and a 1 kg sugar pack are not the same machine), and choosing thin-film bags during quoting and then needing thicker film for export — the jaws and motor torque have to be sized for the worst case from day one.
